One could say the Frosted Mug in Venice, Florida, is historic. It opened in 1957 when the city, located south of Sarasota, had a two-way county road and was the only commercial business around.
Fast forward to 2011 and the Frosted Mug is still going strong. The main drag it’s on, U.S. 41 – the Tamiami Trail – is now lined with commercial businesses and the joint seems a little out of place but it’s delicious and packs a lot of character.
The Frosted Mug is a cash-only eatery. Casual. Definitely not fancy but delicious food and friendly service. It’s where the locals go.
New Year’s Day I met up with travel writer and blogger Sandra Friend and her mother at the Frosted Mug. Yum-olla! What a way to start another year – with a rockin’ burger in a hamburger joint with a lot of character. Plus, the meal was nice on my budget.
You order your meal at the outdoor counter and sit either outdoors or inside where a server will deliver your meal. I had the Cheeseburger in Paradise with blue cheese and bacon ($3.99) accompanied with thickly sliced, golden onion rings ($3.49) and a cold root beer ($1.69). What else would I be drinking?
We ate inside during this visit because it was a little breezy and dust was kicking around outdoors. Inside is cheery and clean with yellow walls which pop against the black and white tiled floor.
The Frosted Mug is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Can’t wait to visit again!
