Meet Mary Margaret Manatee and with the holidays around the corner, enter this giveaway for the children’s book. Giveaway is open through 8 p.m.. ET on Dec. 9, 2013.  Updated Dec. 11, 2013: this giveaway has ended. Congrats to Gordon and Julia!

It’s not easy being different, especially as a kid, and being teased by your peers. The new children’s picture book “Mary Margaret Manatee” by award-winning outdoor writer (and friend) Lucy Beebe Tobias, subtly addresses this.

The 40-page colorfully illustrated book, featuring artwork by Tobias, follows the adventures of a young Florida manatee and her land-based and aquatic friends. She doesn’t look like the other manatees and that’s OK. She’s comfortable with being herself.

I won’t give the story away but “Mary Margaret Manatee” also educates readers on how to save the manatee and encourages kids to think about how they can preserve the environment where they live. The book’s Florida manatee study guide section provides resources, trivia and other fun activities.

The soft-covered book is $9.95 and available on Kindle for $5.95.

I’ve purchased a copy to give as a gift to new parents. I’m hoping they read it to their sweet daughter so she grows up loving the Florida environment. I have to admit, seeing Mary Margaret Manatee’s lovely, long lashes, makes me smile.

  1. Tolstoy is my favorite writer and Anna Karenina is my favorite book. My favorite character is, of course, Levin, who represents so many of the things I believe in strongly.

  2. This book looks cute!!! I’d love to read it to Little Man! My favorite character is Anne from Anne of Green Gables. Little Man’s favorite is Mickey Mouse 🙂

  3. I do declare Mrs Melanie Hamilton of Gone With The Wind as my favorite fictional character! I pray to have 1/2 her grace in awkward social situations!
