Emailed Question: Paranormal Places I’ve Visited

A few weeks ago I received an email from a reader stating she is interested in paranormal places to visit. I’m not an expert on the topic but do enjoy a good ghost story or two. Following is a short list of places, primarily in Florida, where I have participated on a ghost tour or did something related to the paranormal world. Hyperlinks either provide a review or my personal experience along with additional information on the particular destination and/or business.

Amelia Island, Fla.: I don’t have just one recommendation but there are multiple opportunities for ghostly encounters, or at the very least, some spirited tales.

Cassadaga, Fla.: Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp – Established in 1894, this is the oldest active religious community in the Southeastern United States. The camp is home to several mediums and psychics where visitors can arrive the same day and meet with one. Stop at the Camp’s visitor center to select a medium or psychic. According to many, there’s been some pretty funky things happening throughout the camp and the nearby Cassadaga Hotel.

Ghost Tours of Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg, Tenn.:  Ghost Tours of Gatlinburg–  This tour was okay but I have been on better tours. Maybe the guide was new or maybe Gatlinburg doesn’t have an interestingly spooky past. It was a nice walking tour through the city and to a cemetery on a hillside.

Monticello, Fla.: Big Bend Ghost Trackers – In 2003 ABC News named Monticello the South’s Most Haunted Town for a high concentration of ghosts and paranormal activity. The 1872 John Denham House Bed and Breakfast and Monticello Opera House are believed to be haunted. Big Bend Ghost Trackers offers walking tours of downtown Monticello primarily around Halloween. Book early if interested, tours fill up.

Voodoo Museum in New Orleans

New Orleans, La.: New Orleans Spirit Tours – Take a voodoo walking tour during the day to checkout a Voodoo spiritual temple and Marie Laveau’s tomb or venture into the city on your own to find the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum. New Orleans Spirit Tours offers a host of other tours including ghost tours in the evening.

Punta Gorda, Fla.: Historic Ghost Tours of Punta Gorda – Ghost tours through a cemetery and through downtown Punta Gorda are offered throughout the year. Learn the history of this Southwest Florida community as well as chilling and fun ghost tales.

St. Augustine, Fla.: – I don’t have one specific recommendation for a ghost tour in St. Augustine, I have enjoyed several walks and trolley tours. I understand there’s spooky bout tour, too.

Savannah, Ga.: Sixth Sense Savannah Tours – Join a guide on a spooky walk through the most haunted American City. I took the midnight walk and let me just say, it’s pretty spooky hearing eerie stories late at night when not much is around. And I swear my camera picked up some paranormal activity. Big lesson learned, never accept anything from the devil at the crossroads!

Savannah Cemetery

Tallahassee, Fla. – I’m not aware of any specific public ghost tours in Tallahassee but one of the coolest things I did when living there was spend an evening with a Tallahassee paranormal group called S.I.T.E. Not sure if the paranormal investigative team is still together but it’s a night I’ll never forget. It involved spending time in a forgotten cemetery and I experienced things I would have not believed unless I had seen them.

Hope this short list of where I have traveled is useful and I would love to hear of other great places for ghost tours, paranormal experiences or spooky encounters.

Visiting the Flight 93 National Memorial with My Dog

Driving through Western Pennsylvania’s rolling farmland, I held back tears thinking of the afternoon’s destination, the Flight 93 National Memorial. Almost 20 years later, the thoughts of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, still trigger deep emotions.
