A destination offering national parks with miles of hiking, a rain forest and a natural boiling lake is my kind of getaway and a vacation in Dominica fits the bill. Honestly, I had no idea I could find something like this in the Caribbean. My friends from the Commonwealth of Dominica, “The Nature Island,” have asked me to share some of the vacation treasures this eastern Caribbean island has to offer.
Whether an adventurer or romantic, a vacation in Dominica serves up sites and activities appealing to all interests. Being a solo traveler with my heart still in Yellowstone National Park, I am interested in learning more about Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From what I’ve researched this national park is located atop a volcano which means the area is alive with thermal activity as hot springs, fumaroles (steam vents) and a boiling lake. It’s also lush with vegetation and home to miles of hiking trails, some for the casual hiker and others for the experienced adventurer.
In addition to exploring national parks, other things to do during a vacation in Dominica include water activities as snorkeling and diving along with sperm whale watching trips. Rum tours also appeal to me along with the culinary opportunities such as ice cream made with fresh tropical fruit. Yum! While the sites sound fascinating, so do the people. English is the official language while some folks speak Creole. The island is home to the pre-Columbian Carib Indians. And can’t forget the festivals! Checking the Dominica website, there are annual special events ranging from the Annual World Creole Music Festival (October) to Carnival (either in February or March).
Indeed, a vacation in Dominica to either explore or relax is definitely up my alley and I just need to find the time. Luckily, living in Florida, it’s about a hop, skip and a jump away.
Disclosure: Thank you to Dominica for supporting my traveling habit.
