Wordless Wednesday: Elian Taken 10 Years Ago

Ten years ago this month, April 22 to be exact, Elian Gonzalez was taken from his relatives’ Miami home to be reunited with his father Cuba. The move caused much uproar in Little Havana, where he was staying. I was living in South Florida at the time and the afternoon of the day he was taken, my then husband and I ventured to see the protesting.

These images were taken before I owned a digital camera and I was in awe of the media attention. Having watched daily reports on the television about the little boy, finally seeing the house Elian lived and the protesters put everything in perspective. It’s an experience I’ll never forget and the whole Elian Gonzalez situation intrigued me to venture to Havana.

Do you recognize the man in the silver suit behind the Channel 10 truck? It’s none other than FOX’s Shepard Smith when he was working for the Miami FOX affiliate, WSVN. I was too chicken to ask for a photo with him, I mean, who asks for a journalist’s photo?
