“Triumphs and Pitfalls of Using Social Media” FOWA 2011

Howdy! If you’re visiting this page, you either attended the Florida Outdoor Writers Association’s Annual Conference in Naples in August 2011, or you randomly landed here. Either way, welcome!

Below is a list of resources included in my Aug. 25 “Triumphs and Pitfalls of Using Social Media” presentation along with other resources I use and think will be of value for you. Drop me a line through the “contact me” form if you have additional questions.

Facebook.com – To date, world’s largest social networking site. As of July 2011, the site has about 750 million users.

Flickr.com – Photo sharing site; Pro option (annual fee) allows you more flexibility with your images. Getty Images also has a relationship with Flickr.

FriendorFollow.com – See who’s following you on Twitter and who you’re following but they aren’t following you.

Google Alerts ( www.google.com/alerts) – Monitor what is being said about you or a specific topic through setting up free Google Alerts.

Google Analytics (www.google.com/analytics) – Free resource to track traffic into your blog/website to determine how people are finding you and what they’re reading.

HARO (Help a Reporter Out www.helpareporter.com) – Whether you’re a source or expert or need to find a source or expert, this is an awesome service for both members of the media and public relations professionals. Sources/experts registered receive updates three times a day on what members of the media are looking for. Journalists can submit a request to find the right expert for their story. As outdoor writers, I recommend registering to receive the queries. It’s also free!

Instagram (instagram.com) – Photo sharing application for the iPhone and iPad. Can link with Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites.

InvisiblePeople.tv – “Homeless Has a Name.” Follow founder Mark Horvath on Twitter: @hardlynormal.

NASA Tweetup (nasa.gov/tweetup) – An experience of a lifetime! Although the space shuttle missions are done, NASA is still launching rockets into space and carrying on research and will continue to hold Tweetups at NASA facilities throughout the country. Follow them on Twitter.com/nasatweetup for updates. Check out my blog posts related to #NASATweetup.

Jennifer A. Huber is an award-winning travel and outdoor blogger and writer in Southwest Florida. Originally from Buffalo, N.Y., a hiking trail led her to a career path in the tourism industry for more than 30 years. She spent a decade with a park management company in Yellowstone, Death Valley, and Everglades National Parks. She founded the travel blog, SoloTravelGirl.com with the goal of inspiring others to travel alone, not lonely. The unexpected death of her former husband in 2008 reminded her how short life is. His passing was a catalyst for sharing her experiences with the goal of inspiring and empowering others to travel solo. Jennifer holds a Travel Marketing Professional certification from the Southeast Tourism Society, is a certified food judge, member of the NASA Social community, and alum of the FBI Citizens Academy. When not traveling, she is either in the kitchen, practicing her photography skills, or road tripping with her dog, Radcliff.
