I’m not ashamed to admit I inhaled my pulled pork sandwich at Nancy’s Bar-B-Q in Sarasota, Fla., in mere minutes. It wasn’t because I was in a hurry but because it was insanely delicious.

Piled high on a soft bun, the 4 ounce pork dripped with a sweet tomato-based barbecue sauce complementing the meat’s delightful smoke flavor and Nancy’s special 14-ingredient dry rub.

My meal came with two sides, probably the best collard greens I have ever had and mediocre sesame crunch salad. (This slaw-like salad was crispy but didn’t have the amount of flavor I like.) Dinner was washed down with a bottle of grape soda and topped off with a delish red velvet cupcake accented with a light and smooth cream cheese frosting. The tab was about $13.

Other menu items at Nancy’s include pulled chicken and quarter, half or whole chicken; beef brisket; salmon; ribs and chopped salad. Combination trays of pork, chicken, ribs, brisket or salmon are also available.

Nancy’s Bar-B-Q opened in Sarasota’s Burns Square in March 2011. The neighborhood isn’t the typical location for a barbecue joint but Nancy’s ain’t your typical BBQ hangout. Simply, the restaurant is adorable and perfectly themed. A red tractor sits outside and a pig statue sits above the entrance to welcome diners. Metal tractor seats adorn an exterior wall and inside feels like being in a new, chic barn. Seating is at picnic tables, both indoors and out. In the enclosed patio, there’s bar-type seating ideal for solo diners.

It’s the little touches that make Nancy’s special. Meals are served on aluminum trays with crisp white paper liners and barbecue sauce is poured from maple syrup pitchers found on the tables. Before Nancy’s Bar-B-Q was a brick and mortar eatery, it was lunch food cart/truck setting up at different locations in downtown Sarasota.

“Tell Nancy this was delicious,” a gentleman called out to one of the restaurant’s staff.

I concur.

Nancy first caught my attention about a year ago when she posted about chocolate chip and bacon cookies on Facebook. A chef after my stomach. Ever since, I’ve been curious and am glad I finally had the opportunity to dine at the new restaurant. Have you been to Nancy’s Bar-B-Q in Sarasota?
