WFP Staff’s Perspective on Women in Afghanistan

Friends, family and blog readers who’ve been following since before I launched SoloTravelGirl.com, know I visited Afghanistan in 2006. For those who don’t know, I traveled with Global Exchange on a 10-day trip to Kabul with the focus on women making change in a post-Taliban society. (You can read the blog posts from the trip on www.quirkykitsch.com.)

Saying it was a life-altering experience is an understatement. Unfortunately, since the media reports only deteriorating conditions, I’ve become numb to the depressing news coming out of the country but having been there, I know there is good happening and hope is alive.

I was happy to learn from the World Food Program about a public information officer, Challiss McDonough, who’s spent the past year supporting food relief operations in Kabul. Check out this interview with her about her challenges and challenges of women.

All is not dark, McDonough is finding hope, the same hope many women I met with had.

I wish her well, I know her task is not easy.
